Bulgarian School Concert
May 25th, 2024
On May 24th, Bulgaria commemorates one of its most cherished holidays: the Day of
Bulgarian Education, Culture, and Slavonic Literature. This significant date pays
homage to the creation of the alphabet by St. Cyril and Methodius, who made profound
contributions to Bulgarian and Slavic cultures.
As a cherished annual tradition, celebrations were held in Vancouver, BC. This year’s
festivities held particular significance as they marked the 30th anniversary of Bulgarian
educational and cultural activities in the city, as well as the end of the school year.
During the celebrations, the Municipality of Vancouver, led by Mayor Ken Sim, made a
historic announcement declaring May 24th as Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in
Vancouver, British Columbia.
The proclamation was officially signed by Mayor Ken Sim and presented to
representatives of the Bulgarian-Canadian Society in British Columbia.
This milestone followed diligent advocacy efforts by the Consulate General team over
recent months, making Bulgaria one of the first countries to receive such recognition.
The ceremonial presentation of the proclamation took place amidst the festivities
commemorating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the first Bulgarian school
in British Columbia. To celebrate, the Bulgarian School “Saint Kiril & Methodius Heritage Language School”, hosted a vibrant concert featuring student performances of plays, traditional songs, dances, recitals, and artwork.
For us, at Zornitza Dance Ensemble, this celebration was a highlight not to be missed.
The Bulgarian educational system established in Vancouver has played an integral role
in our lives. Through this program, we have gained the invaluable opportunity to study
the Bulgarian language, absorb generational wisdom, and foster the confidence to
communicate effectively both locally and globally. Being a part of the heritage language
school program has allowed us to develop a deeper appreciation for the richness and
importance of our language, which we will always cherish.
Zornitza extends a heartfelt thank you to all the dedicated teachers and leaders whose
unwavering commitment, energy, and infectious enthusiasm have transformed them
into mentors for all past, present, and future students of the school. Your tireless efforts
are truly appreciated and make a profound impact year after year.
We are proud to be a part of the Bulgarian-Canadian Society in Vancouver.
